The internet has been a great thing for humanity especially in the online casino games sector, but it also brings with it many negative effects. The internet is the most powerful tool that we have ever created, and it can be used to do good or bad things. In this article, I will talk about some of these negative effects.
Net censorship
As our society becomes more and more connected to the Internet, those who govern what’s being said and done on the Internet are controlling what we may say, read, hear and watch. This is called “Internet Censorship” and it doesn’t just affect citizens living in authoritarian regimes. It is now becoming common place here in the United States. If you think that something that you don’t like online is not being censored off of the web, then you would be wrong. If you thought that Big Tech companies were not censoring content they find objectionable, then you’re wrong again. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Google are all guilty of filtering speech, deleting accounts and shutting down websites. And it is getting worse at an alarming rate.
Online child sexual abuse
In 2016, the FBI reported having received over 17,000 complaints from people around the country regarding online sexual predators. Almost 90% of them described being solicited by someone under 18 years old. State laws vary when it comes to defining “child pornography.” Most states use a definition similar to federal law, which says that any material produced using someone under the age of 18 is illegal. However, there are other states that define a minor as 16 or 15 years old, meaning even legal adults are violating state law if they look at such images.
Hate Crimes
On Tuesday, May 29th, 2017, Facebook announced that they removed several pages associated with hate groups because they had violated their community standards. These pages were full of hateful imagery and posts that abused members of the LGBTQ+ community! One of the admins told NBC News that they felt persecuted. “We’re basically fighting against 24/7,” he said. “It’s exhausting.”
This was a very sad day in history, however, before Facebook took action, the social media platform allowed the promotion of violence towards the LGBTQ+ community. They didn’t remove the admin’s account but they did ban him from the website altogether. Freedom of Speech vs safety of the public – how should they be balanced? How can we protect ourselves without infringing upon others rights?
This is a tough question but it does raise the issue of whether or not we need new laws to protect us, or if the current laws are enough. Many people believe that new legislation should be passed to protect us and our children from harm. But what about the right to free speech? What about freedom of expression? Must we sacrifice one to save another?
The truth is that there is no easy answer to this question. There are many different opinions on this topic. Some people feel that these types of crimes will always exist, so why bother trying to stop them? Others feel that these types of acts shouldn’t be tolerated, regardless of age. Still others feel that these types of things are inevitable and that the only way to prevent them is to make sure that everyone has access to education.
